Jürgen Krönig, Commentator and Author, Die Zeit

Energy and climate realism

“There are too many illusions propagated and circling around alternative and renewable technologies: about their promise and potential, about the time frame, in which they can be introduced and changes be realised, about the jobs that a new green Keynisanism can create and about the political impact of a radical green policy.” Download speech

Matthias von Randow, Director, Air Berlin

Modernisation is key

“For Air Berlin energy efficiency is a major factor in overall performance and profitability. We have gone from just two aircraft to 140 now; fuel makes up 25% of our overall expenses. Each kilogram of kerosene saved gives us a boost in CO2 reduction. This is why we have driven fleet modernisation and made innovations like introducing winglets on wings or reducing the paper pilots bring into cockpits.” Download speech

Mark Lewis, Managing Director, Commodities Research, Global Carbon Markets, Deutsche Bank

Higher energy prices vital

“The task is to facilitate changes in governments, industries and cities, to achieve the best balance in different parts of the equation so that the worst aspects of climate change can be averted. There will have to be controls over people’s actions, a combination of carrots and sticks will be needed to drive changes in cities, and energy prices will have to be much higher.” Download speech

David Marsh, Chairman, London & Oxford Capital Markets

Gain as well as pain

"Achieving energy efficiency is not just the key to combating climate change – it’s also a way of making businesses and economies much higher-performing. Therefore, when we promote the goals of low carbon, we shouldn’t go around in sackcloth and ashes - for this is the way to make beneficial changes to all our economies. There will be gain as well as pain."
