The second annual German-British Forum conference is devoted to the question of assuring economic expansion and political stability across a Europe that is wider than the present European Union. The ambition is to follow on the work on the ‘Rhineland’ and ‘Anglo-Saxon’ models of last year’s conference and ask how these precepts can be extended eastwards.
As a result of intensified competition, European corporations are internationalising their activities far more quickly than governments. Even though the EU is responding with its own ‘internationalisation’ drive – the single market, EMU and enlargement – the politicians are behind in the race.
This programme is designed with two interlocking aims. The first goal is to provide thought-provoking contributions to the subjects under debate, illustrated by Roger Beale, 1997 Cartoonist of the Year from the Financial Times. Along with all this, you will find the necessary details of the conference.
The second aim is to offer highlights of last year’s conference. Read 12 months later, these contributions demonstrate a freshness that underlines their percipience when first voiced.
The German-British Forum is proud to be able to attract participants of such high calibre. We are particularly pleased this year to have widened the international scope of our contributors, including speakers from France and Poland.
