Professor William Paterson OBE

Willie-PatersonProfessor William E Paterson is Honorary Professor of German and European Politics at Aston University.

Previously he held chairs at Warwick, Edinburgh and Birmingham universities. Co-founder of ‘German Politics’, he  also co-edited the ’Journal of Common Market Studies’. Shortly after German unity he delivered the eulogies for Willy Brandt and Helmut Kohl at their honorary doctoral ceremonies in Warwick and Edinburgh respectively.

He has authored, co-authored or co-edited 27 books and published over 160 articles. Professor Paterson is very active in German-UK relations. He succeeded Lord Hurd of Westwell as chairman of the German British Forum (2005-2013) and has been a director of the Koenigswinter Conference since 1996.

Professor Paterson was awarded an OBE by the United Kingdom Government in 1999 and a Bundesverdienstkreuz  1te Klasse in 1998. He has been honoured for lifetime achievement in political science, the study of German politics  and EU Studies by the relevant professional associations.
