Stephen Welton, The Business Growth Fund

Stephen Welton is Chief Executive of Business Growth Fund (“BGF”) which he launched in May 2011.

BGF is the UK’s leading growth capital institution supporting SME’s with £2.5bn of committed capital from the major UK banks.  Over the last 3 years BGF has invested in over 80 companies across the UK committing in excess of £450m.

Stephen has worked in the development capital and private equity industry for over 25 years including with Henderson, Barclays and most recently JP Morgan Partners (CCMP Capital), where he was a Founder Partner and member of the Investment Committee. He has extensive experience working with private companies, most recently as Chairman of Edwards, the global engineering group headquartered in the UK.  Before this, where he was Chairman and CEO of TV Travel Shop prior to its successful sale to a global media group.

In 2013, Stephen joined the Advisory Group formed specifically to guide the UK government on the direction and priorities for the new British Business Bank, a Government funded institution which provides lending and broader support to small and mid-sized businesses.

He has law degree from Durham University and is a qualified Barrister-at-Law. Stephen is responsible for overall strategy and day to day management of BGF, as well as chairing the Investment Committee.


Stephen will provide an overview of the BGF since it was launched in May 2011, and which companies it has helped finance. He will include a slide on Germany and his perception of the difference between mid-company funding in Britain and Germany.
